Description

This is a very fine quality antique Fire place Fender.

It dates to the early part of the 19th Century, and is made of black fretwork sheet steel with brass moulding trim to the top and base.
It has fine brass bun feet and 2 very splendid large cast finials, which unusually, are removable.

The finials have long cast brass shafts which slot very neatly through dovetail shaped grooves to the brass top moulding and into steel brackets on the inside of the fender.

I think originally this fender may have had 2 alternative pairs of fittings - the finials as shown, to present a very elegant Drawing Room Fender of Sheraton influence, and a further set of taller rods with bracket shaped tops which would have provided support for a set of fire irons standing vertically on either side of the fender. The metal stops to the base plate of the fender support this suggestion.

We have of course only one set now, the finials, making for an extremely elegant Fireplace Fender.
