18th Century Oak Spice Cabinet

Description

This is an early 18th Century Oak Spice Cabinet.
It is a piece of country furniture, from a farmhouse or cottage, and would traditionally have been used for storing culinary herbs and spices (In the 18th Century, many exotic spices which came from the West Indies, and the Orient were highly valued and kept in secure cupboards - eg All Spice, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Ginger, Cloves, Pepper, Vanilla).

The case is of joined oak plank construction. The door has a frame of oak and the central panel is straight grain English Walnut. It fits flush and has a beaded edge.

The 10 drawers are graduated in size - they all have their original oak linings and are of hand cut dovetail construction.

The cabinet is extremely heavy. It would have stood on a side table or dresser. It has had hanging plates on the back but these would have been later. I would not recommend hanging it unless it was very well supported.

Condition: Very good throughout. The hinges are old replacements and some of the ring handles are replacements too. It has had a different knob to the door in the past but the one it has now is a very appropriate cast brass stud of the period.
The lock and escutcheon look to be original.
