Description

This is an exceptional late 17th Century English Oak Refectory Table, with its original 2 plank top.

The top, which is removable, and almost 8 feet long is made from 2 fine wide boards of oak, pegged together, and secured with 2 rails underneath. The corners retain their 'stepped and rounded' edges.
Tapered oak pegs through the rails secure the top to the base.

The baluster legs have incised lath turned scratch detail - well worn, and the deep apron rails and stretchers are all original. The effects of being rubbed by boots for over 300 years is well in evidence, remarkably so to the corner under the drawer.

The drawer is later, 18th or early 19th century, and very much part of the history of the table.
The feet have all been re blocked at some time also, to compensate for the wear of years standing on stone or earth floors.

The provenance of this table is unknown, but it would have been built for a 17th Century English country manor or farmhouse.

It seats 8 to 10 comfortably and the top has a good overhang on all sides, so knee room is not compromised.

The table is in sound excellent condition, and has superb colour and patina.
