Description

Rare and unusual, antique sterling silver and enamel flag vesta case / match safe holder.
This vesta is inscribed on the reverse with family coat of arms, the rampant Lion with the Latin quotation underneath "Secundis Dubiisque Rectus" translating to "Upright both in prosperous and doubtful circumstances", under which is the following inscription
"LUCIFER Monkstown to Youghal Aug 19 1895 Aug 24 1897 Aug 16 1898".
The Marine flag and inscriptions we believe are of Irish origin, possibly for an annual boating race or ferry crossing but it is certainly an interesting Marine collectible item with lots of history.
Makers mark D&F, Birmingham hallmark, 1898.

Condition Good original condition. Slight loss of enamel on flag pole & flag. Wear consistent with age and use.
