A Highly Unusual & Very Decorative Pair of Very Large Antique Embroidered Silk Panels.

Interestingly these panels are dated in Arabic to 1273 (woven within the design) which translates to 1856.

They are constructed from a woven base, embellished with an embroidered design in coloured silks. Fairly thin and lightweight it is unlikely that these panels were ever intended for the floor and perhaps more likely were used as wall hangings or portieres.

The main field is of a red wine colour, containing a repetitive and alternating design of boteh motifs, all contained within a border of meandering vines issuing flower heads and fruit clusters. With arched designs to the one end only, as shown, and an abrupt end at the other.

The colours are all reversed on the other side, meaning the central field is of a green ground, with a red border and vice versa.

These large panels represent a highly unusual find and are undeniably decorative: a superb lot for the interior designer and with some imagination would look fantastic hung on the wall, either flanking a central feature or perhaps adapted and used as portieres.

Each measures approx 48 inches wide x 112 inches long (122 cms x 285 cms)

Condition -

Well used and weathered. Some all over fading to the embroidered silk threads. The green and wine red ground still rather vivid. A few pulled threads here and there as well as marks from use and also a red ink stain of some kind to one of the arched ends. In used, antique condition throughout. More photos can be supplied upon request ahead of purchase, including in different lighting and of any close ups if necessary. Just ask.

These may respond well to a professional clean by qualified antique rug textile specialist, but I will leave that choice to the new owner.
