Description

A Large Antique Welsh Oak & Elm Farmhouse Kitchen Dresser.

Dating to around the late 19th century.

A classic dresser, of very handsome proportions and good quality, oozing heaps of country / bucolic character!

The construction is of solid oak to the main carcase, with the drawers all from solid elm. There is a lot of quarter-sawn timber on show here, with wonderful rich colour and some beautiful figuring in the grain.

This is a large, practical and impressive piece of furniture that offers voluminous storage in the form of two banks of deep drawers each flanking a central cupboard, which is inset with a removable shelf. The upper section with central, graduated shelves, flanked by cupboards, which are each inset with adjustable shelves, set over small drawers and further cubbies higher up.

This piece would look absolutely splendid decked out with blue and white china or your other valued possessions.

Please note: the legs were reduced by around 4 inches in the distant past, so that the piece could fit into a farmhouse kitchen......however, crucially, I have the original squat cabriole legs to the front, meaning the piece can be easily repaired and returned to it's original height and look, if desired. This would be a relatively cheap and easy job for any carpenter / restorer......but it's a decision I'll leave to the new owner.

Collection in person from the Cheltenham area please, or delivery is available for £100 (this price excludes Highlands, Islands and Ireland).

69 inches / 175 cms wide x 21.5 inches / 55 cms deep x 81 inches / 206 cms high

Condition -

This dresser is well-used and has lived a life. There is some minor loss in places (for example a section of cock-beading to the edge of one drawer, and to the lower edge of one of the side panels). There are a few narrowish gaps to the elm-bases of the drawers, as clearly shown in the relevant photos. The main upper work surface with some scuffs and scratches commensurate with age and use. The locks in the drawers are still present but I don't have a key. The lock to the central cupboard door is missing, as is the lock to the door to the left-hand cupboard to the upper section. Note, the legs were cut down by around 4 inches several decades ago in order that the dresser could fit into a kitchen, however, I have three of the original legs that were originally removed, including the two short front cabriole sections. This is an easy and low cost repair / refit for any carpenter or restorer.
