Paul Hogarth Rare HC Lithograph - Maison Bollinger
Description
Art lover? Champagne lover?
Here's the perfect piece which unites the two!
Paul Hogarth OBE RA (1917 - 2001). 'Maison Bollinger' - Lithograph, hand-signed, titled and annotated in pencil to the lower right.
This is a large, striking and highly decorative lithograph. It depicts the beautiful facade of Maison Bollinger, which has been the original home of the illustrious Champagne House since 1829. Mason Bollinger nestles within a 430 acre estate in Ay, North Western France. Planted with Grand Cru and Premier Cru vines and woven into the scenic beauty of the Champagne region, the House has become a mecca for Champagne lovers from across the world.
Beautifully rendered by Paul Hogarth in his unique, playful and inventive style, this print was originally limited to just 200 copies. This example is annotated 'HC' in pencil for Hors Commerce (not to be sold or 'out of trade'). Such copies were only available directly from the artist. A HC is given as a gift to the artist for allowing the publisher to print their images. Of all the special prints, the HC's are the most valuable, since they are more rare.
The print has just been reframed and reglazed with new conservation mount and is ready to hang.
Paul Hogarth was a painter with a talent for illustration and reportage, which was allied to his love of travel. This led him to produce drawings and watercolours recording events and places all over the world. As an illustrator he studied under James Boswell, and worked with a number of eminent authors, including Robert Graves, Graham Greene, Brendan Behan, Lawrence Durrell, and William Golding. He illustrated the New Penguin Shakespeare series of paperbacks in the 1970s.
He was elected an associate member of the Royal Academy in 1974, a full member in 1984 and was awarded the OBE in 1989.
His work is held in collections worldwide.
