Description

A Splendid, Unique and Important Royal Scottish Academy Award Medal.

Presented to the artist, Sir Edward John Poynter, B.T., P.R.A., R.W.S. (1836 - 1919), on the occasion of his Elected Honorary Membership to the Royal Scottish Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.

The medal was engraved by Benjamin Wyon (English, 1802 - 1958) after stunning designs by Sir Joseph Noel Paton (Scottish, 1821 - 1901).

It is impressed to the rim: 'SIR EDWARD JOHN POYNTER, P.R.A. ELECTED HONORARY MEMBER MDCCCXCVII' and was presented to Poynter in 1897 whilst he was acting President of The Royal Academy of Arts in London - superseding Sir John Everett Millais.

Excellent, historic 'country house' provenance can be provided to the buyer. This is the original, authentic medal presented by the Scottish Royal Academy to the artist himself and is expressly not a copy or edition of any kind. (Please see my other listing on Antiques Atlas for an exquisite, original observational study by the same artist).

This item would represent a superb acquisition for a private collector of Poynter's work, a Poynter academic/scholar, or, perhaps an association or institution.

Poynter, an artist of true international significance and standing, was a painter, watercolorist, illustrator and designer.
