A curious matching pair of tall, rustic, carved oak cupboards original survivors from the Arts and Crafts period.

These items would have once belonged to a much larger assembly/piece of furniture and are therefore offered as incomplete, yet offering considerable potential for the right interior.

The tall narrow doors, attached with beautiful, period brass fittings, are inset with well-carved panels and feature shell, heart, olive and scrolling foliate motifs.

These cupboards are English and possibly herald from the Cotswold school. I'm dating them to around 1900. More recently they have been used to house clothes (one being crudely inset with loose ply shelving, the other used as a hanging cupboard) but they could in fact be employed anywhere in the home and adapted as needed - just add imagination.

They would look superb as a design feature in a period country property, positioned in opposite corners and perhaps flanking a fireplace or range. I certainly think that a kitchen or rustic living space would see them used to their best. The doors alone are worthy of consideration.

These are craft-built items and when seen verso appear rather rough and ready. The facing sides have a lifetime of accumulated layers of polish, varnish, knocks, dents and imperfections. As such they are loaded with charm and offer a very genuine, original and uncontrived look.....a million miles away from modern, manufactured 'shabby chic'.

Dimensions

Because these corner cupboards actually have FOUR sides, there are several ways in which they could be angled/positioned. Please email for a diagram showing all measurements. Height is 73.5 inches.
