Description

A really rather special serpentine Bachelor chest of drawers carrying the lable of cabinet makers Thomas Clarkson. This chest of drawers from the early 1900s is in Chippendale style with the blind fret down the styles and the short cabriole leg with relief carving. This Bachelor chest has the brushing slide and the cross banding around the top which boasts flame mahogany graining. A lovely item and a superb neat size with good storage. Great looking chest that could fit into any room .................................................................................................................... Thomas Clarkson & Sons have been in existence since the 17th century. The Clarkson family were first recorded as clockmakers in London in 1640. In 1755, Hewitt Clarkson moved the business to Cock Street, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. The family continued to trade there successfully, manufacturing long-case clocks. In about 1780, the business moved to Dudley Street, later known as Snow Hill, in Wolverhampton. In 1840, in response to the declining popularity of long-case clocks, the family founded a furniture business at Snow Hill. In 1871, it acquired the freehold of the premises and sold out in 1960.
