Description

This is an antique Dollond, achromatic library telescope c.1790.

Mounted on a solid brass tripod stand with cabriole legs and spade feet the mount allows fluid movement in both the horizontal and vertical planes.

The telescope consists of a mahogany barrel, single draw tube and rack and pinion fine adjustment tube operated by a thumb wheel to the side of the main barrel.

The optics and 51mm (2") achromatic objective lens are in good order and the scope offers a clear sharp image. The four lens eyepiece is contained in a segmented brass tube with a flared eyecup.

Signed 'Dollond London' on the brass back plate of the barrel, a similar scope can be seen on a sheet from a catalogue of P & J Dollond in an eighteenth century promotion as reproduced in the excellent book 'Eyes Right - The Story of Dollond & Aitchison 1750-1985' by Hugh Barty-King P.47.

Dimensions:
Objective Lens: 51mm (2")
Closed Length: 76cm (30")
Fully Drawn Length: 101.5cm (40")
Height on Stand at Horizontal: 51cm (20")
