Description

A very attractive antique Regency period pollard oak lamp table of elegant proportions and excellent colour. The top shows beautifully figured pollard oak chosen for its rich swirling grain and decorative appeal, making this a piece designed to be noticed rather than purely functional.
The hinged lift-up top opens to reveal useful internal storage, confirming this as a practical occasional or work table rather than simply a surface piece. This feature would have originally been used to store sewing items, writing materials, or personal effects, adding a level of function that is often missing from standard lamp tables.
The base is particularly well executed and gives the table its presence. It rises from a central column with carved detail leading into shaped legs with confident, crisp carving typical of the period. The decoration reflects strong classical influence which defined Regency furniture design.
The carvings consist of:
• Acanthus leaf carving around the column and upper sections inspired by classical Greek and Roman ornament
• Fluted or reeded detailing running vertically down the column giving an architectural feel
• Shaped legs with subtle carved edges and scroll influence
• Leaf and scroll carved terminals to the feet adding weight and visual balance
These details elevate what is a relatively small table into a refined decorative piece reflecting the architectural taste of the early 19th century.
Although now described as a lamp table it would originally have been made as an occasional or work table, used beside seating for reading, writing or taking tea, with the added benefit of concealed storage.
What makes this piece particularly special is the use of pollard oak, which is far less common in Regency furniture and was selected for its striking grain rather than simple utility. The quality of the carved base sets it apart from many standard examples, with a stronger architectural feel and more confident execution. The proportions are well judged, giving the table a natural balance that is often lacking in lesser pieces. It also represents a type of furniture that was used daily, yet has survived with good colour and crisp detail, something that is increasingly difficult to find.
