Description

A striking and highly decorative pair of large-scale giltwood console tables crafted in the Italian Baroque Revival style during the mid to late 19th century. These impressive architectural pieces are richly carved throughout with bold scrolling acanthus leaves, central shell motifs and deep relief detail, raised on substantial plinth bases and terminating in finely carved lion’s paw feet which add strength and classical character to the design.
The scale of these consoles sets them apart. They were designed not as everyday furniture but as statement pieces for grand interiors, traditionally placed against a wall beneath mirrors in entrance halls, salons or reception rooms. Their purpose was to display fine objects such as candelabra, sculpture or porcelain while creating symmetry and impact within a space.
Each console retains its original loose marble top formed from a beautifully figured Breccia marble. This type of marble, characterised by its dramatic fragmented pattern and rich natural colouring, was widely used in high-quality Italian furniture of the period and adds both contrast and refinement to the gilded bases.
The carving is of good depth and quality, indicating a skilled workshop rather than later mass production. The boldness of the design combined with the architectural bases and distinctive lion’s paw feet gives the pair a strong presence that works equally well in both classical and contemporary interiors.
Condition report
Good overall structural condition. The frames are solid and support the marble tops well. The gilding shows age and wear in places, consistent with use and contributes to the overall character.
