Description

A rare opportunity to acquire an outstanding quality large yew wood Irish Killarney marquetry inlaid centre table which most likely can be attributed to the renowned Irish cabinet maker James Egan, Killarney, Co. Kerry, Ireland (fl.1844-1870). The whole piece is the typical style of Egan who was responsible for making the best quality pieces which like this table all depicted shamrocks, harps and foliage.

This majestic table boasts a quality large circular yew top with a serpentine moulded edge with exquisite marquetry inlaid shamrocks, foliage and double crossbanding. The top is supported on a magnificent shaped hexagonal pedestal column inlaid with shamrocks and harps raised on a circular platform base inlaid with shamrocks, foliage and harps standing on three shaped scroll feet.

This rare and spectacular table is most certainly one of a kind displaying the highest quality of craftsmanship throughout. The intricate detail of the inlay and the quality of the materials is first class. The probable maker James Egan sold his pieces to Royalty including The Prince of Wales who on his visit to Killarney in 1858 purchased from him a chessboard and other small articles. A much more important visit was that of Queen Victoria, the Prince Consort and the Prince of Wales to the town in August 1862. They were the guests of Lord and Lady Castleross and stayed at Killarney House. Egan was engaged to make two presentation pieces of furniture to offer to the Queen. One of these was a cabinet and desk of arbutus wood with elaborate inlay work.

Pieces of this size and quality are most likely to be found in museums, private collections or owned by Royalty.

A fabulous piece of history to be admired.
