Japanese Meiji Mixed Metal Bronze Jardinière

Photos

Description

An elegant Japanese Meiji period (c. 1868–1912) bronze jardinière of rounded form, finely cast with a tranquil naturalistic scene in relief. The surface depicts three herons or egrets standing in shallow water beside reeds and a gnarled pine branch. The detailing is exceptional, with high-relief birds in silver or shibuichi, accented with gold inlay (possibly gilt shakudō or gold damascene) in the pine needles and water lines.

The interior shows original age patina consistent with Meiji-period use, and the base bears an engraved signature, likely that of the artist or foundry. The form and quality suggest this was a decorative piece for display in a high-ranking home or for export to Western collectors of Japanese art during the late 19th to early 20th century.
