Victorian Brass Tipstaff
Description
This is a brass tipstaff on a walnut shaft, measuring 17 cm long. It has a crown on top and stamped with the numbers "27". The cross above the crown bears a resemblance to the Maltese Cross, but we can find no reference to these being used in Malta. The tipstaff was used as a delightful symbol of authority and dates back to the time of Chaucer and The Canterbury Tales, when he refers to it as "a staff tipped with horn" in the Somnours Tale. They were also made in silver, but these are very rare and almost never come onto the market. We feel quite privileged to have come across this brass example.
