Description

19th century silk, wool and watercolour picture of a Scottish scene depicting 3 figures disembarking from a rowing boat assisted by 2 soldiers. A castle is shown in the background to the loch. This is a lovely framed picture, well stitched and painted, measuring 30" x 21" (outside measurement)

There is much of interest in the provenance supplied by the label on the rear, on which additional information has been handwritten, saying:

"Faces painted by Sir John Pender. One of the women's faces was Aunt MacFarlane. Granny Baxter's mother was married twice - first time to a MacFarlane and then a MacLeod."

This is believed to be Sir John Pender, (1816-1896) who was born in the Vale of Leven, educated at Glasgow High School, and who was a Scottish submarine communications engineer and politician. In 1866 his company undertook the first successful laying of the transatlantic cable from Valentia Island, off the coast of Ireland, to Newfoundland and Labrador, and was the most successful and commercially viable of all the transatlantic cables and was 100% British financed. He went on to found 32 telegraph companies.
