Terrestrial Table Top Globe

Description

A 6" terrestrial desk globe by Johnston's of Edinburgh with brass circumference, complete with cradle supported by ebonised turned legs.

The firm of W & AK Johnston was to become one of the major publishing houses of the 19th century. The co-founders, brothers William and Alexander Keith Johnston, learned their trade as apprentices to the Scottish globe maker, James Kirkwood in Edinburgh before setting up their own business in the city.

In amongst their many achievements, and one of their major claims, was that of the first physical globe, which won them a number of awards at The Great Exhibition of 1851.

As you can see from the photographs, the globe is in good condition, with no more wear than would be expected from a globe of this age, which all indications show to be circa 1880 - 1890.
