Large 18th Century English Walnut and Gilt Mirror
A Splendid, Large 18th Century English Walnut and Gilt Mirror.

In the late Palladian taste with elements of the transition to Rococo, this wonderful mirror is of a type made throughout Europe and America, its roots being in England and the designs of the likes of William Kent, Inigo Jones and their followers. The walnut veneers are surrounded by gilded gesso mouldings and a scroll pediment at the top. The central Ho-Ho bird or eagle finial is definitely a nod to the rococo and shows that that mirror dates to c.1750 or so. The gesso retains much of its original incised detailing and gilding. Down the sides of the piece are fruiting branches.
