Description

A William 111 period, late 17th century pocket watch by John May of London. A fire gilt fusee verge movement with a well engraved balance cock with a female head. Beautifully pierced movement pillars. A silvered regulation disc and signed to the mechanism 'Jno May, London 4691'. A fine quality silver champleve dial with gilt border and wavy 'Dutch' edging to the 5 minute outer dial markers. Gilt pierced hands and a rarer feature of a date aperture above the 6. A large silver repousse outer case in fine condition marked 'Mauris Fecit'.

John May of London was a Dutchman by birth and free of the Clockmakers Company in 1692/3. He is recorded as working in Loomes 'The Early Clockmakers of Great Britain' as working until 1702. This watch has come direct from a private collection.
