A wonderful Victorian Games Compendium contained within a superb walnut case having a cross banded lid with applied mouldings, white metal mounts and a raised copper plaque of men watching a game of chess. The box having applied arches with decorative turnings and white metal mounts. The whole raised on a moulded plinth base with turned bun feet. The sides having unusual cast metal carrying handles.The lid lifts and reveals the contents which include a complete boxwood and ebony chess set, a set of turned draughts, a set of dominos, 2 folding games boards with inlaid detail for chess, backgammon and 2 other board games. 2 Pall Mall whist markers, pack of old cards in leather case, various counters and dice plus 4 sets of coloured turnings. The tray lifts out to reveal a set of 4 turned counter wells, a dice shaker, a superb card press and 2 boxes all in good quality boxwood.
