Description

Hutton-Clarke Antiques is pleased to offer this striking 18th-century French oil on canvas portrait depicting a distinguished nobleman identified as Lefebvre Caumartin de Cailly, 1st Marquis de Joyeuse.

The sitter is portrayed seated beside a table with scholarly volumes and writing desk, symbolising status, learning, and authority, a composition typical of French aristocratic portraiture of the early to mid-18th century. The painting shows strong facial modelling and period detail, with traditional powdered wig, black robe, and lace cuffs set against a warm tonal background that gives the portrait real depth and presence.

Presented in an ornate later 19th-century gilt composition frame with brass identification plaque, the portrait has a strong decorative and historical presence and would sit beautifully in a study, library, or period interior.

Height 108 cm, width 88 cm depth 7cm
