A superb watercolour of horse racing at Brighton 1945 by Lionel Dalhousie Robertson Edwards R.I., one of the leading Sporting artists of the 20th century.

Lionel Edwards was born in Clifton on 9th November 1878. He painted mainly in watercolour, horses, hunting and racing. He studied under A.S.Cope and Frank Calderon. He was elected member of the Royal Cambrian Academy in 1926 and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1927. His illustrated published works include 'Hunting and Stalking Deer' 1927, 'Huntsmen- Past and Present' 1929, 'My Hunting Sketch Book',2 vols.,1928 and 1930, ' Famous Foxhunters' 1932, 'See from the Saddle' 1936, 'Royal Newmarket' 1944, 'Reminiscences of a Sporting Artist ' 1948, 'British Racecourses' 1951 and several other publications. He lived at West Tytherley in Wiltshire for many years and died on 13th April 1966.

Brighton was closed to racing during the war years, so we presume this was created when the course re-opened in 1945. It is indistinctly inscribed under the mount ' August 1943 (date indistinct) 2nd Summer Meeting '
