Description

A very fine pencil drawing by Middleton Todd, a study for his drypoint etching entitled, " A new string for an old tune". It was issued as a limited edition of 60 prints, one of which is being offered with this drawing.

Arthur Ralph Middleton Todd painted in oils,watercolours,etching and engraving, mainly of figure subjects and portraits.He was a great admirer of Degas and produced some exquisite drawings and pastels. He was born at Helston, Cornwall, the son of the painter Ralph Todd (fl.1880-c.1929). He was briefly tutored by Stanhope Forbes before studying at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, at the Slade School 1920-21, and in France,Italy and Holland. He served in the Motor Transport section during 1914-18 war. He was elected A.R.E. 1923,A.R.W.S 1929, R.E.1930,R.W.S.1937,A.R.A. 1939,N.E.A.C. 1945, R.A.1949 and R.P.1958.
He occupied various teaching posts in Leicester,at Regent Street Polytechnic,at the R.A. Schools and at the City and Guilds School,Kennington.
