Description

After the antique A stunning Mid-17th Century antique carved wooden head and shoulders bust of the Emporer Hadrian. The original marble bust can be seen at the Palazzo dei Conservatori, Italy.
Hadrian was Roman emperor from 117 AD to 138 AD. He rebuilt the Pantheon and constructed the Temple of Venus and Roma. He is also known for building Hadrian's Wall, which marked the northern limit of Britannia.
Our fine example retains significant levels of its original polychromy.
Sourced directly from a private collection in France.
Condition - surface wear and minor age related splits to the timbers (stable) as per photographs. Wear to tip of nose.
