Description

A rare and important find sourced directly from a large private residence in North Norfolk.
A fine 16th Century Renaissance Period chest in original polychrome circa 1520-1540.
With domed top lid above a highly decorative front with four carved "Romayne" type panels divided by carved muntins depicting naive stylised flowers and foliage. An armorial device is apparent to the top apron etched in red oxide. Each side also bears a carved Romayne panel and has its original wrought iron carrying handles too.
Internally, the chest is connected by the carcass by way of strap hinges and unusually there are two tills, one at either end, the top of each decorated with punchwork decoration.
Condition - Surface wear to polychrome as one would expect. Some water staining and scuffs are apparent to the top (again age related). The mouldings to the bottom plinth have been replaced historically. Hinges have also been replaced historically.
