Description

Antique hardwood merchant chest
This Antique merchant chest was first crafted in the first half of the 19thc. using an Indian hardwood, it is very much of the grain and tone of European walnut.
Originally this merchant chest was made to be used as a very secure chest for transporting valuables, on the arduous journeys around India.
Antique chests such as this make superb coffee tables as well as conversation pieces.
Isn't it wonderful to imagine the stories such chests could tell of their perilous travels either by cart, wagon, camel or sailing ship.
The lid opens to reveal a mainly open storage space, and a section to store small valuables and money. Imagine how much you will be able to store away as well as using it as a feature or coffee table.
The exterior is a lovely honey colour with a wonderful patina. A blacksmith would have handmade the iron corners and long strap hinges, which are applied to exterior.
This lovely trunk is polished all the way around and so can be used away from the wall. These are especially good as interesting coffee tables.
