Antique Colonial trunk with iron lock plate
This Antique Colonial trunk with iron lock plate was made in the early part of the 19thc.
Made of solid jac fruit (Indian hardwood), this chest would have been made to use by a merchant to transport his valuables around the Eastern trade routes.
As this was made to be secure, but also survive the rigors of its transportation by mule, wagon or ship it had iron straps to give extra strength.
The blacksmith made lock and lock plate are decorative but also fascinating.
The led open to reveal a large storage area as well as a small lidded compartment for the small valuables the merchant would need to carry.
Imagine the stories this could tell of its journeys around the lawless areas of the East.
These make wonderful talking pieces as well as of a good size to use as a coffee table.
