Description

This is a nice simple medium sized Victorian pine kitchen or dining table. It is slightly different to most in that it has an additional leaf which was classed as a bread board and which adds to its usable size and slides into one end, supported by an additional swing leg. These used to be quite common in Victorian days but a lot were lost so you don’t see many of them now. The table top is planked with a straight edge and rounded corners. The table has a plain skirt and sits on square cut, slightly tapering legs. The table is a good colour, slightly darker on the base than the top. This is because the top gets more use and light usually. The bread board end is made of pitch pine, this is slightly darker because it is a denser wood. This wood was chosen because a bread board end was often used for baking bread etc and it would stand the heavier wear of kneading better. The bread board has two sticking out pieces of flat iron on one edge. These fit into holdings for them under the table top. They are supported by a fifth leg which swings out and holds the table top up. When not in use this leg folds against one of the other legs and is held in place by a hook and eye, as seen in the final picture. The table has a good long drawer at the opposite end to the bread board. This has two original wooden knobs and slides as it should.

The table is in good condition, the top is secure on the base and the legs are firm. It stands well with no looseness or wobbles. The bread board is easily put in place and is in good order.

The table measures 130cm long x 96.5cm deep x 73cm tall. Floor to apron (chair and leg space) it is 60cm. The bread board measures 50cm long x 86cm wide.
