A mid-17th century oak coffer with three octagonal moulded and carved front panels, lift up rectangular lid on block feet.

Literature: Percy Macquoid “English Furniture Vol. I, “The Age of Oak” See Fig 186, page 214 dated 1647, pages 228-239 figs. 205,206,208,209 and 212 all dated between 1640 and 1680 and all having comparable octagonal panels.

Victor Chinnery “Oak Furniture – The British Tradition” plate 9, page 225 for a similar treatment on an American, Essex County Massachusetts coffer from 1690-1705. Also figs. 3:133, 3:300, 3:350, 3:406, 3:409, 3:314, 4:126, 4:132.
