Description

A fabulous set of apothecary scales by Sewell & Young. The bright cut steel scales measuring 10.5 cm across the beam are in great condition with no signs of rust. The brass pans are also in very good condition. The scales balance remarkably well given their sensitivity. The original paper label to the underside of the lid states 'Sewell & Young At the Hand and Scales, No.5 in Bear Street Leicester Fields London'. Sewell & Young were recorded in the Directory of London & Westminster at this address until 1794, which would put the manufacture of these scales during the reign of George III. The company later became Young & Son (1811-1901) and then Young, Son & Marlow (1902-1972). The mahogany box has a lovely patina and opens and clicks shut nicely. A flap inside the box lifts to reveal the original weights. The original steel tweezers are housed to the side of the box. The box measures 12.1 x 6.8 cm and is 2.5 cm high.
