George III Silver and Steel Apothecary Scales

Description

A very nice set of Georgian Apothecary scales. The cut steel scales are in very good condition with no traces of rust. The sterling silver pans are also in very good condition. The scales balance remarkably well given their sensitivity (the original file marks on the undersides of the pans can be seen which were presumably for calibration). As can be seen in the photos, the pans are both hallmarked. However, the assay office has not been stamped. This was, apparently, quite common with small silver items and usually in London. The duty mark depicting George III and the date letter mark of r, together indicate that they are London manufactured and date to 1792. The maker’s mark of M.R and the shape of the lozenge suggest that they were made by Mary Reasey – better known for watch cases. Each silver pan weighs 10 g and has a diameter of 5.9 cm. The steel beam measures 15.3 cm in length.
