A fabulous Parkins & Gotto black leather despatch box with Bramah lock and key. As can be seen in the photos, the box is in excellent antique condition. The gilt stamp to the rear of the inside of the lid states ’Parkins & Gotto Manufacturers 25 Oxford Street’. This suggests that the box was made before 1860 when 24 Oxford Street was added to their premises. The Bramah lock works as it should and the box locks nicely with a satisfying click. At some point in its history, the lock has been removed (possibly for cleaning and servicing) as the leather has been cut to the inside of the box in order to remove the locking mechanism. The leather has been re-adhered and this is barely noticeable. The exterior leather covering is of very high quality and is in excellent condition given the age of the box. The box measures 40.6 cm wide, 26.8 cm deep, and 15 cm high. A beautiful box in such lovely condition.
