Description

A 19th century Grand Tour finely carved walnut sculpture representing the Lion of Lucerne a mortally wounded Lion with the Latin inscription "Helevetiorum Fidel Ac Virtui" (to the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss). The original carved in stone 1821/22 commemorates the Swiss Guards massacred in 1792 defending Louis XV1 and the Royal family during the French Revolution when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris. The sculpture is one of the most famous monuments in Switzerland and prompted American author Mark Twain to praise the sculpture of the wounded Lion as "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world". Circa 1880.
