Description

This extraordinary object is in complete and untouched condition. It is raised on cabroile legs with paw feet and serpentine shaped on all 4 sides with a pagoda top. The whole retains all its original decoration, lifting handles and door knob. 750mm high, 380mm wide and 32mm deep. Circa 1825.

Plate warmers were used, as the name suggests, to place items of crockery in by a fire to warm, making Toleware ideal for this purpose, as the metal retains more heat.

The term tôle, derived from the French tôle peinte, "painted sheet metal", is synonymous in English usage with japanning on tin
