Description

In the mid 18th century 'Chippendale' style with carved top rails and central splat bearing the coat of arms of the Blood family.
These fanciful chairs are a wonderful example of the type of Colonial furniture which was manufactured for English patrons when posted or living in far flung colonies of the Empire. They were made by local cabinet makers often working from the simplest of sketches or designs of the original English furniture fashionable at the time.
The Latin inscription "Honor Virtutis Praemium" translates as Honor is the reward for virtue and forms part of the Blood family coat of arms. An ancestor of the Blood family was Colonel Thomas Blood (1618 – 24 August 1680) an Anglo-Irish officer and self-styled colonel best known for his cattempt to steal the Crown Jewels of England from the Tower of London in 1671. Circa 1850
