Fine Quality Antique Russian Icon of the Madonna & Infant Jesus. Circa 1850. Painted on heavy wooden panel, this Icon is a wonderful depiction of this much painted subject. The Madonna is painted in red robes with jewelled and gold leaf edges. A jewelled Crown on her head is surrounded by a Gold Leaf Halo. The Infant Jesus is painted in white and gold garments, a scroll in his hand and a Gold Leaf Halo surrounding his head. The background is painted in a shade of blue with Russian characters to the left and right of the panel. There is age related scuff marks on the right hand side and the bottom of the panel has some age related paint loss. The back of the panel has some residue of burn marks. To hang the panel, there is a small brass circular ring. Beautiful and well executed piece.
