Description

Victorian sextant in its original mahogany veneered case. The sextant is brass with a silvered gauge with the degrees on it and a very stylish ebonised grip. There is a Glasgow makers label on the actual sextant which looks like ‘A.Debbie Glasgow’ who would have been the maker of the piece. It has a movable arm which is lockable. The glass prism is mounted and framed. There are various other adjustable and coloured lenses for eye protection. There are 3 in circular casings and 4 in rectangular cases with rounded ends. There are 3 different lenses which can be interchanged - one of the lenses is cracked. All the movable pieces have good action, there is no corrosion. The case has four different retailers labels – a brass one inside the case ‘James Murray, Calcutta’ and 3 paper labels on top of one another inside the lid. The case is mahogany with a brass screw down lid and open dovetails, with some old repairs.
