Description

Circa 1870, French bronze, marble and ormolu mounted mantel clock of monumental proportions. The centre piece is a large bronze depicting a Goddess holding aloft a bunch of grapes, and a rising goat trying to feed off them. The base is a rocky outcrop with a small cherub feeding from the goat. The Goddess rests her other arm on a gilded vine, which is held in a fluted tapering urn sitting on a base of more ormolu mounted grapes. The bronze is set on a demi lune of white marble on a fluted tapering section which is encrusted with a massive piece of ormolu with a block of foliate casting. From this rises twisting vines, flowers and grapes. In the centre of it is a large enamel clock with a beaded bezel and bevelled edge bow fronted glass. The clock face has Roman and Arabic numerals, two winding holes and very fine ormolu hand cut hands. Beneath this is a further marble section with a small apron, and the whole piece stands on 4 squat foliate cast turned feet. The clock is accessed from behind through a glass door. Serviced, working and in beautiful condition.
