Description

Circa 1870, George III style carved wood and gilded overmantel mirror after a design by Thomas Chippendale. This magnificent mirror has a central shaped oval mirror plate surrounded by profusely carved wood which has been gilded. The top of the mirror has a pagoda lidded gazebo beneath which stands a Chinese gentleman with a pagoda hat and parasol. Behind the carved figure is a small plate glass which is framed with carved giltwood, with uprights of simulated tiles on each end and gilded drapes. This pattern repeats at a lower level on either side. The Rococo mirror has wonderful carvings on each side of two large gilded left handed and right handed Ho Ho birds which are carved in full relief. The carving continues around the whole frame, with foliate carving on the inside and simulated drapes on the outside. The bottom of the mirror has a carved section again of foliate carving with a mirror behind it. This is a classic example of a Chippendale mirror. The colour and condition is superb. The style of the mirror is top class and it is an exhibition quality mirror.
