Description

High Status Knightly Sword of the 13th Century.
Bronze pommel and bronze decorated guard with remains of silver inlay. The pattern on the guard is made up of triangular sections - each with a Fleur-de-Lys motive in their centres.
Pommel and guard dating to 1260s-1270s.
Armour piercing blade - several generations earlier. Fine example of a family heirloom blade being remounted with a more up-to-date hilt (c 1260s-1270s).
Blade shows much use in its working life. This could be either English or Welsh.
Found in the river Clwyd between Rhuddlan and Dyserth and must be closely associated with the war-like history of these two castles. Found by Mr.G.Powell in the 1950s and went through several private collections.
An iconic object of the wars between England and Wales.
Totally stable and professionally conserved.
