Description

A great example of a circa 1800s, polychrome painted Eastern European (possibly Hungarian) blanket/wedding box with original painted decorative finish. It is beautifully painted with a naïve floral design and a wonderfully worn, distressed patina, showing more than 200 years of use. The chest sits on turned bun feet and still has the original wrought iron hinges and handles (one handle has somewhere in the chest's history been replaced with another 19th century wrought iron handle thus not original to the chest). There are signs of historical woodworm but they are long gone and have been treated for good measure.
