Description

A fascinating loving cup (a mug with two handles) with a transfer print on the front of the Duke of Wellington astride his favourite horse Copenhagen. This was probably made to celebrate the victory at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 when Napolean was defeated, but made much later.
The unusual thing about this cup is the two brightly coloured frogs and a similar newt on the inside. This must have been a real shock to anyone drinking from the vessel.
To the back it has written on it "A present for George Merfir 1868".

There is also a motto which reads:
"A friend that is so social good natured & free
To (xx)pol of my liquor right welcome shall be
But he that is proud & illnatured may pass
By my door to an alehouse & pay for his glass"

The (xx)pol word is not clear and I cannot work out what it should be.

The condition is reasonably good. There is rubbing to the purple transfer decoration, especially on the handles. One handle has have been replaced / repaired, but this has been done very professionally and I only just noticed it whilst writing this. I cannot see any chips or cracks or hairlines.

To the rim it stands 5 inches and from handle to handle is 9 inches.

UK postage is included in the price.
