Description

An early frog mug in the shape of a loving cup or a trophy. The handles of the cup are finished with a leaf decoration where they are joined to the main body.

I date this to early 19th century by the colour, design, and method of decoration. The base colour is buff with the name and outline of the decoration and drawn onto it before glazing. The floral decoration has been painted after glazing.

The cup was given to a John Mytton, a surname derived from the meaning "in the middle". The place where he resided is Halston, and I can only find two Halstons both in Ireland and both "in the middle of nowhere".

The frog is yellow and looks quite friendly for something that was supposed to frighten the drinker.

It is good condition for its age. There appears not to be any man-made damage, no chips or cracks. However there is a stress crack running around the base, this is firm but isn't sealed with glaze. The black dots in the bowl are kiln frits from the firing.

UK postage is included in the price.
