History: John Barwise (c.1756–1820) was a respected British watchmaker born into a clockmaking family in Cockermouth, Cumberland. Around 1780, he moved to London and established a successful watch retailing business at 29 St Martin’s Lane. His reputation grew steadily, and in 1790 he married Elizabeth Weston, with whom he had eleven children, though several died young. Two sons, John II and Weston, later joined the business, forming Barwise & Sons around 1816.
Barwise became a notable figure in horology. In 1805, he was among fifteen watchmakers appointed by the Board of Longitude to judge a dispute between John Arnold and Thomas Earnshaw, highlighting his expertise and standing. His success allowed him to acquire a second home in Dulwich by 1800, reflecting his wealth.
In 1811, Barwise was robbed by highwaymen, an event that may have influenced his decision to rent out his Dulwich property soon after. Despite this setback, the family business continued to thrive. Around 1820, Barwise & Sons received a Royal Warrant as watchmakers to King George IV, marking a peak in prestige.
After John Barwise I’s death in 1820, his son John II carried on the business. He later collaborated with inventor Alexander Bain on an early electric clock patent in 1841 and was involved in efforts to industrialize watchmaking through the British Watch and Clockmaking Company. Although this venture failed and led to bankruptcy in 1846, the Barwise name remained significant in horological history.
