Artist Biography
Fortunino Matania is one of the best and well known illustrator of his generation. His skill were seen at a young age, exhibiting his first work at the Naples Academy age 11. He worked for the Illustration Francaise, The Sphere, Britannia and Eve and Illustrated London News. He worked as a war artist in both World Wars ( this painting is from the latter). He exhibited at the Royal Academy and RIPWC.
Painting Details
This is a great and rare example of Matania’s work. Titled 'now for Japan', it shows a British Naval Seaman towards the end of the war. The image would have been used by the British Government for propaganda use. The painting is stamped with the artists studio stamp to the reverse.
The painting is offered in a modern white frame.
