An original WW2 caterpillar club badge in 9ct gold with garnet eyes awarded to Squadron Leader L J Simpson DFC A401542 who was a POW in Stalag Luft 3 during the great escape and served in 460 squadron RAAF.

We managed to track down L J Simpsons service record and his debrief on his release from the POW camp which is very detailed and describes the auctioning off of the executed prisoners effects to raise funds for their families.

The citation for his DFC was awarded for continuing his bombing mission despite losing one engine and hydralic power to the rear gun turret on his plane.
