Description

#AD160:

A beautiful Victorian era chip carved antique stamp box with great patina and nice wear consistent with years of beautiful handling use. It has 4 tilted compartments for early single stamps. It would have sat on a Victorian desk in a study, with writing utensils such as dip pens and later fountain pens and ink.

The carving is well executed, and the patina is a rich dark chocolate brown/black. Chip carving is a folk art decorative craft done by hand with small chisels to remove small chips. It and can be found in use as early as the 6th century and can also refer to the same practice seen in pottery embellishment. Later, the effect was produced by casting, which is an imitation of chip carving.

There are 2 intricately carved round center concentric circles, with 8 star squares on each end. A beautiful running border ensues. The condition is beautiful, with some small unobtrusive age cracking on bottom edge, consistent with age, see photos. This beautiful mid 19th century English treen piece was found in Totnes, Devon, England.
