A highly Impressive and wonderful Late 15th / Early16th Century 1480/1520 North European probably German carved reliquary bust of a saint in walnut.The saint adorned with his mitre and having exquisitely carved curly hair and beard, dressed in a plum red gown with a golden brown collar, carved fully in the round our holy saint ( possibly saint Augustine 354-430) has a comforting contemplative expression creating a atmospheric and spiritual presence around him.Substantial amounts of original polychrome still cover the figure with some later touch ups in places, the back of the saint really shows the fine depth & texture of the hair along with even more polychrome of gold hatchwork flakes and red foliate work within, he is of excellent propotions without being to overbearing with a hight of 21"high 13"wide 6"deep, just the right size to fit into a little alcove. A wonderful early piece of European art.
