Description

Lovely late 19th century carved wood fertility statue, c1880. This is a fine oceanic statue, most probably from the Cook Islands, depicting a traditional female figure, symbolising fertility. Beautifully carved from a single piece of wood and heavy at 0.7kg it has lovely primitive form and would display well in a traditional or modern setting. The wood has taken on great colour/patina. Overall condition is good there are some historic movement cracks where the wood has expanded and contracted but all very minor and as you would expect from an antique carving.
